Columbia MSEE FAQ:
4.1 What happens if I need to register for 6 credits to complete my degree? Do I still get university housing?

Answer by: dpwe - 2005-08-14

In general, graduate housing is a scarce and valuable resource, and is reserved for our full-time students i.e. those taking 12 credits per semester. Housing is managed by Columbia Institutional Real Estate; their Information for New Tenants details many of the conditions of tenancy.

It is however very common for students in the MS program to complete 24 credits in their first year (i.e. two semesters of 12 credits per semester), to be left with just 6 credits required to complete their degree. In this particular situation (where fewer than 12 credits remain to complete a degree), the minimum number of credits required to maintain your eligibility for housing is the number of credits required to finish your degree. This exception will only apply once, in the final semester of your degree.

(Note that graduate housing is not controlled by the department, and this explanation is just my understanding, not an authoritative statement of the policy.)
