As noted in the page What are the specific requirements for the MS degree?, there are certain graduate-level (i.e. 4xxx) courses offered in the School of Engineering and Applied Science which are not, however, acceptable towards your MSEE degree. This is because they overlap too significantly with material covered in an EE Bachelor's degree, or they are judged by the faculty as having insufficient technical content or otherwise unsuitable as counting towards the degree. Listed below are some particular 'borderline' courses that we explicitly exclude for clarity (as of fall 2005). Any other class that does not have a clear and substantial technical content will also not be acceptable for the degree; if you are in any doubt about a course you are considering, consult a faculty advisor.
| Course | Explanation |
|---|---|
| SIEO W4105 Probability | Significant overlap with probability as covered in BSEE degree. |
| SIEO W4150 Introduction to Probability and Statistics | Probability portion represents overlap with material covered in BSEE degree. |
| IEOR E4207 Human Factors: Performance | Limited technical content; available only to IEOR students. |
| IEOR E4208 Seminar in Human Factors Design | Limited technical content; available only to IEOR students. |
| IEME E4310 The Manufacturing Enterprise | Limited technical content. |
| APMA E4206 Applied Linear Algebra | (No longer offered) Significant overlap with undergraduate applied mathematics classes. |
